8 SS19 Men's Fashion Trends To Know
I feel like I am always starting off these blog posts by making reference to the current weather in New York City… ANYWAY, it’s still pretty cold. As we creep into the spring and summer months, I am starting to plan for my warm weather style. While keeping a classic personal style is super important to me, I also like to make sure I am aware and current on everything that is “trendy” in the upcoming season. For all of you that are in the same boat as me, I thought it would be nice to round up 8 fashion trends for the SS19 season.
Futuristic Dad Sneakers
You might remember an older blog post I did about this recent hit trend in 2018 which led me to purchasing my Alexander McQueen Sneakers. This Spring/Summer season expect to see much more of these chunky silhouette shoes. The drop of the Balenciaga “Triple S” sneaker and the resurgence of Fila’s “Disrupter” have kept this trend moving forward. Characterized by a chunky silhouette, futuristic soles, and frankly what we might traditionally call “ugly” styles. Balenciaga’s recent release of the Track Trainer has kept the house as a leader in the “ugly shoe” department that is dominating the footwear industry.
2. A(nother) Moment for Neon
Color trends in fashion have gone from millennial pink, neutral, and most recently bold neon’s such as green, yellow, and orange. Brands like MSMG, Louis Vuitton, Acne Studios, and Prada dove head first into this bold style for Spring and Summer. What was once a symbol of the 80’s and 90’s has been resurrected from the fashion grave and is taking over both high fashion as well as everyday style. Styling bright colors like this can be somewhat intimidating but there are a few easy tips to get you started HERE.
3. Denim Redone
As you can see there is a lot of influence from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s in this season’s fashion trends. Added to the list of resurrected trends is denim, which is having a major comeback in an untraditional way. Skinny jeans are making their way out of fashion after years in the spotlight and wide leg, loose fitting, and “dad” inspired jeans are back in a big way. GMBH, Versace, Balmain, and Off White all had huge denim sections in their runway shows during shows during London, Milan, Paris, and New York Fashion Week. Lighter washes, mixing of textures, and loose silhouettes were shared among all the fashion houses. I like to think of this as very Steve Jobs inspired trend. What can I say, the guy is even a trend setter.
4. Oversized and Layered
Layering with oversized pieces like coats, shirts, denim, and sweaters are a trend that everyone seems to be incorporating as we get into the warmer months. Gucci, NOAK, Vetements, and Stella McCartney are just some of the design houses leading the charge with this styling fad. If you want to start incorporating this style for yourself, read how HERE
5. Breezy, Floral, and Loud Short Sleeves
Last year’s Hawaiian Aloha shirt trend has given rise to a variety of different kinds of breezy short sleeves that were worn by all the street style stars during the SS19 fashion show season. Design houses like Fendi, Marni, and Versace overflowed with these styles during their runway shows. Styling these short sleeves can range from tucked in or open, to layered over a basic t-shirt or long sleeve button up. It is nice to see a bit of fun, floral, and breezy trends coming from an industry that is typically so fast moving.
6. Spring Knits
Don’t get rid of those sweaters yet because spring and summer knitwear is a big theme this season. Lanvin, Acne Studios, and Gucci are among the designers who showed a lot these fun print and colorful nights on their SS19 runways.
7. Bags for Boys
Handbags, primarily cross-body bags, have really become a bona fide fashion trend for boys this season. Bags that we might have only seen worn by our female counterparts a few years ago are now a huge part of men’s fashion, especially streetwear. What started as simple the fanny pack, has evolved into a cult staple for fashion aficionados. Some of my favorite styles of these new “Boy Bags” come from brands like Louis Vuitton, Dior, Prada, Kenzo and Maison Margiela.
8. Utility Inspired
Street style star or construction worker? Not an uncommon question being asked these days with the rise of utility inspired outerwear. Multiple pockets, bright orange, and military inspired vest are another big trend of the Spring/Summer fashion season. This trend is a bit of a nod to Helmut Lang, who first presented men’s garments with multi storage solutions in the 1990’s. It’s not surprising to see pieces with 5-10 pockets throughout on pieces today. The style is being pioneered currently by Moncler, designers like Kim Jones at Dior and Virgil Abloh at Louis Vuitton, and the award-winning label A-Cold-Wall*.
