How to Style the "Ugly" Dad Sneaker

THE TREND

Almost anywhere you look on social media, you can see the “Ugly” sneaker trend in action. Every designer from Balenciaga to Fila are jumping on the trend and they have been seen all over the runway the past two seasons. I took a chance on this trend with the Alexander McQueen Oversized Runners. I got them practically brand new at The RealReal (don’t underestimate the power of consignment people), and even though they can be tough to style at times, I feel like I get the most effortless-yet-stylish looks when wearing them.

SHOP THE LOOK

After making this impromptu purchase, I have to admit that they sat in my closet for about a month before I really took them out to style. When you don’t have much meat on your bones like me, sometimes the oversized look can get a bit clownish (SIDEBAR: I wanted to get the Balenciaga Triple S but they actually made me look like a clown). I do love this trend, but like all fashion trends, it’s important to know what works for you and what really doesn’t.

If you want to try this trend for yourself, make sure that the top and bottom halves of your outfit are evenly balanced. These style sneakers tend to be really chunky and grounding, so throwing on a solid jacket or oversized tee will help your entire look feel more balanced.
