Why Taking Time For Yourself Is So Important
Sometimes in life you need some “me time.” Whether that is taking an extra-long shower, popping on a face mask before you go to bed, or just reorganizing your weeks to include more personal time. It can be so easy to get burnt out from life if you find yourself neglecting your own self-care. Through my own personal wellness practice, I find myself being so much more present, having more mental clarity, and overall peace in my daily life.
While we have all heard how important “wellness” is to everyday life through all the media attention it has been getting over the last few years, the actuality of creating time to incorporate it into our schedules can be hard. As I get older, my time becomes more and more of a priority and what I do has to have a significant purpose. I’ve personally found it challenging to prioritize self-care and wellness because the results of it are not always tangible or seen right away. If you are anything like me, you want to know the results of what you are doing immediately. From aggressively practicing self-care over the past year, I can say there are incredibly apparent results on your everyday life from doing little things for yourself.
Here are some of the reasons why practicing self-care and wellness are so important and will be the game changer to your new year.
1. Save Yourself From Burnout
Problem: The term “burn out” is often associated with professional life, but being burnt out in your personal life is just as prevalent. Being so “GO GO GO” all the time, especially in a major city like New York, is fun but you will find it is not something that is sustainable.
Solution: Remember that your life is a marathon and not a sprint. Make sure that you can maintain stamina!

2. Manage Your Stress
Problem: The effects of stress for many people, including myself, are stints of anxiety and withdrawing from the things and people we love the most.
Solution: When I take small actions for myself such as working out, getting a massage, or even sitting and lighting a candle I find those episodes of anxiety are few and far between.
3. Start Living and
Become More Present
Problem: As we grow older and find ourselves wrapped up in school or work, we can lose the joy that comes along with life. It is not enough to just go through your day without being present and actively engaged in what you are doing.
Solution: Remember that every day is a gift and self-care is a time to reflect and acknowledge where we are in our life journey.
4. Rewrite the Mental
Narrative
Problem: Negative internal dialog and self-doubt are some of the most detrimental aspects to a healthy mind-body connection. Recently I heard a great talk about how powerful the mind-body connection is to the outcome of our lives and how not maintaining a healthy dialog with yourself can lead to both physical and emotional tolls on your overall health.
Solution: When you practice self-care, you are doing something positive for yourself. This positive action has a direct translation to the things you tell yourself in your head. Rewriting the narrative and squashing the negative voices that sometimes fill our heads are super powerful tools that will help you find so much more peace and productivity in your day.
If there is one thing that I want to leave off on it is that your self-care journey is a process. Start small with little things like positive affirmations, quiet time, or a small face mask and slowly begin to see the impact taking care of yourself can have on your life.
