Tips For Styling Dr. Martens
Happy official start of Winter! It’s been getting colder in New York for a while but the “biting” low temperatures are finally upon us. As the seasons change, I have noticed that my wardrobe slowly begins to shift from my usual fashion forward (and sometimes impractical) clothing, to pieces that are actually going to keep me from freezing my a** off. Before the new year I made sure to maximize all the end of year sales going on at places like Barneys, Jeffrey, Nordstrom, and ASOS, purchasing a bunch of winter appropriate clothing. On my little pre-new years shopping spree I scored a pair of A-COLD-WALL oversized joggers at a GREAT price. I loved the piece, but I realized of that the 30+ pairs of shoes I owned, none of them would work with these pants… bummer right? After the joggers sat in my closet for about a month I finally decided to go out and get a pair of black boots to style them with. The boots I decided to go with were of course the classic 1460 Dr. Martens 8 Eyelet Boots.
The classic Dr. Marten boot, which you can see on the feet of everyone from hipster Brooklynites and little kids to fashion icons and professionals, is a great winter essential but sometimes a challenge to style. I have put together a few tips that I have learned when putting together looks with these classic black boots.
1. Wear Tapered or Fitted Bottoms
Get The Look
Skinny Jeans are the easiest way to style your Dr. Martens. Skinny jeans or tapered pants are a really simple way to show off the boots without looking too “alternative.” Don’t get me wrong, we all love a super fashion forward look, but skinny jeans are great for keeping things understated for those more subtle moments.
2. Don’t Be So Literal with the Tuck
Get The Look
If you don’t go with a tapered pant you can make the boots look just as good, as you can see in this look. When wearing a straight leg pant, don’t feel like you have to tuck them all the way into the boot. A light uneven tuck can be super stylish and give an effortlessly cool feel.
3. Capitalize on the Yellow Detail
Most of the classic pairs of Dr. Martens have a yellow lining surrounding the bottom. Don’t be afraid to capitalize on this P.O.C. (pop of color) and incorporate yellow or other bright colors into your look.
4. Keep the Top and Bottom Half of the Look Balanced
Get The Look
Sometimes the hardest styling challenge with Dr. Martens is how chunky they are. Since they will often make your look very bottom heavy, it is important to balance it out with something that is a bit heavier on top. This could be anything from a long coat, oversized shirt, or a heavy pattern top. Anything that helps bring symmetry to the look and doesn’t make you look shorter is an important tip when styling these boots.
