5 Fall/Winter Menswear Essentials for the Perfect Look
2020 has been nothing short of a whirlwind. Luckily, it seems like the “new normal” of life is approaching. We’re able to venture outside our NYC apartments, see friends (at a distance), and wear all those clothes we hauled during the crazy sales at the beginning of quarantine. As we begin dressing for the great outdoors, there’s one thing to remember… the weather!
As I type out this post, it’s 59 degrees in New York. Fall is here and “Winter is Coming.” Personally, Fall and Winter are my favorite seasons for styling and fashion trends. I think it may have something to do with coming from sunny Southern California, where I never had the chance to wear chunky sweaters or overcoats. Even on a limited clothing budget, it’s super easy to create a capsule wardrobe perfect for the colder months. Here are the 5 Fall/Winter menswear essentials, and a few shoppable options in each category, to always keep you fashion-forward.
Dark Denim
The first essential is a pair of dark denim. This could be a dark blue, grey, or black wash. Retire those light wash jeans you’ve been wearing all summer and switch them out for something more appropriate for the seasons to come. My favorite brand for denim is Rag and Bone. Check out more options for long-lasting jeans for Fall and Winter below.
Black Boots
One of the easiest ways to make it look like you put extra effort into what you’re wearing (even if you didn’t) is throwing on a pair of black boots. These are a classic piece of footwear that you’ll wear year after year, and that can be worn in various ways.
Turtleneck Shirts and Sweaters
This is my personal favorite of the 5. A good solid turtleneck sweater is a piece that you can’t go through the Fall and Winter season without. There is also something about a turtleneck that screams sophistication, class, and style without putting in too much effort.
Trench Coat or Overcoat
While most likely being the priciest of the pieces on the list, the trench or overcoat may be the most important. Your outwear piece is a majority of what people will see of your overall look most of the time during the colder months, so making sure it is high-quality and versatile is essential. I recommend picking up one in a neutral color to maximize your ability to style in many different ways.
Beanies, Hats, and Caps
One of the few accessories for men, head coverings can completely pull together an outfit. I love caps and beanies (and they have real practical use of keeping my head warm #ShortHairProblems). Acne Studios makes some of the best quality beanies, and Junya Watanabe caps are excellent if you are looking for something a bit higher fashion.
